The origin
From a family problem to a system of record.
Dial 4 Dignity began when our founder, Sean, watched his own family try to navigate incarceration — and saw how often the system simply loses things. A request for medical care. A complaint about treatment. A form filed and never seen again.
The first version of the company tried to fix everything at once — calls, commissary, the whole stack. But one piece kept proving more important than the rest: the grievance record. When a complaint disappears, an incarcerated person loses their voice and their day in court, and the county loses its ability to prove it did the right thing. Everyone is worse off.
So we focused. Custos — Latin for guardian — does one thing extremely well: it keeps the record. Every kite, sick-call, and PREA complaint, captured, triaged, timestamped, and sealed so it can't quietly disappear. That single record protects the incarcerated and the institution at the same time. That's the dignity we set out to build.
